Global Warming...Not my problem, what can I do to stop it?

Well, global warming is everyone's problem and we all have to do our part to help stop it.

There are simple things you can do to help.

First lets explain how energy is produced. You see they burn fossil fuels to create electricity. On top of that you have the supply chain to get the fossil fuels to the power plant. This all impacts carbon emissions. Burning fossil fuels is dirty.

Use the off switch.

Turn off lights when you leave a room, no need to light a room you are not in. Turn off computers when not in use, Turn off TV's, don't leave things on like power strips, stand by modes. This all uses electricity. Use LED bulbs, they produce a more natural light and typically have a 20 year life span.

Use less hot water.

Take shorter showers, turn off the water when you are washing the dog. Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth, washing your car. Set your water heater so it is not over heating (if you have a hot water storage cylinder) wrap it in insulation. Buy low-flow shower heads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households. Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry.

Buy energy efficient products.

When it comes to buying a car, chose one that is good on fuel consumption or electric. You can buy energy efficient appliances. Whey you purchase a product try to select on that does not come with excess packaging especially with moulded plastic that cannot be recycled.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables -- get a reusable water bottle. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

Use less heat and air conditioning.

Adding insulation to your walls and loft, and installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home.

Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the day, and keep temperatures moderate at all times. Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer if you have an air conditioner, could save about 2,000 pounds of Carbon Dioxide each year.

Change your light bulbs.

Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with LED, they are even better than compact fluorescent light (CFL). Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a LED used 4 hrs a day can yield $14 in savings annually. LEDs will also last many times longer than incandescent bulbs, about 20 years and many of them come with a guarantee!

Drive Less.

You will save on fuel costs, improve your health, and get a bit of fresh air. You can walk, bicycle, use a skateboard! Explore your community's public transportation system. When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tyres properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Be smart with your clothes.

It takes a lot of water and energy to produce clothes/textiles. Don't buy clothes if you don't need them. Repair when possible, donate unwanted clothing to shelters or charity shops. Repurpose clothing by makiing somting useful. Be creative!

Plan a tree.

During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. And they look nice!

Encourage other to conserve.

Become a global warming advocate. Share information on what you do at home and work. And brag about how much money you are saving on your utility bills! All these steps will save you money and reduce your carbon emissions.

Please don't say it is not my problem,

It is a problem for all of us and will affect all of us! Global warming is real!

Please do your part!

Global Warming is real! Do your part.
